A Fruitful Advent
“Advent is not a mini-Lent, though it is a penitential season of sorts. It has its own spiritual cartography marked by a quieter, gentler spirit, less grieving over sin and more an aching expectancy. It is the season for training the heart to wait well. If Lent mortifies the appetites, Advent forms the interior posture of receptivity: waiting, watching, welcoming the very slow approach of God. To inhabit this season fruitfully, we need ascetical practices that till the soil of hope and make the soul more spacious for Christ’s coming.”
